Racial Attack Victim Grimes Is Arrested On Assault Charge With AM-Racial Attack Bjt

December 27, 1986

NEW YORK (AP) _ One of the three black men attacked by a gang of white youths in Queens last week was charged with stabbing his girlfriend in the back Saturday after she awakened him abruptly, police said.

Officers summoned by the injured woman arrested Timothy Grimes, 19, in the apartment the couple shared in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, said Sgt. Norris Hollomon.

Grimes was irate because Cheryl Sandiford woke him up by jumping on the bed, said Hollomon.

″He wakes up, goes to the television, turns it off, there’s a knife on top of the television, he stabs her,″ Hollomon said. ″His motive seems to be that he didn’t want to be woken up.″

Grimes faced charges of second-degree assault and criminal possession of a knife, which was not recovered, Hollomon said. Ms. Sandiford, 22, was treated at St. Mary’s Hospital and released.

Ms. Sandiford is a niece of Cedric Sandiford, 36, the other survivor of the racial attack in the Howard Beach section of Queens, on Dec. 20, Hollomon said. A third victim, Michael Griffith, 23, was struck by a car and killed as he fled.

Three youths have been charged with murder in the case, and several thousand people protested the attack with a march Saturday in Howard Beach.

In what police called an apparent retaliation for the attack, a group of black youths beat up a white teen-ager Tuesday in Jamaica, Queens. One man was charged with assault in that case.
