Pacers Name Fleming Ass’t Coach

September 30, 2000

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Vern Fleming, who played 11 seasons with the Indiana Pacers, has joined the team as an assistant coach.

``I’ve wanted to hire Vern for a long time,″ Pacers president Donnie Walsh said Saturday. ``I went to (head coach Isiah Thomas) and told him he would be good for our situation, and it was done.″

Fleming was the Pacers’ first-round draft pick in 1984, and started at point guard during most of his tenure with the team. He completed his NBA career with the New Jersey Nets in the 1995-96 season, and then played one season in Europe.

Fleming, 39, has lived in Indianapolis since retiring as a player.
