July 25, 2000

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) _ Chandra Rubin doesn’t want to look too far ahead. With a chance to play one of the top players in the world, though, she can’t help but look forward.

The eighth-seeded Rubin defeated Colombia’s Fabiola Zuluaga 6-4, 6-2 Monday in the opening round of the Bank of the West Classic at Stanford’s Taube Family Tennis Center.

If she wins her second-round match, Rubin could be possibly face top-seeded Lindsay Davenport.

``She would be the first seed I would play,″ Rubin said. ``You always look forward to playing the top players to see how you match up, and then go for it.″

Rubin lost to Davenport in the second round of the tournament last year.

Rubin, who is making her fourth appearance in the tournament, said she was just looking to play a solid match.

``It was good for me just to concentrate,″ she said. ``This was not an easy match. It was nice just to get into the tournament.″

It was the first meeting between Rubin and Zuluaga.

``I’ve been working on becoming more aggressive,″ said Rubin. ``I want to force it a bit more and attack the net. You can’t sit back and rally forever against some of these girls.″

In another match, 10th-seeded Amy Frazier defeated Lilia Osterloh 6-3, 6-3.

``I was happy with the way I played the whole match,″ said Frazier, who is making her 11th appearance in the event. ``I love playing here.″

In earlier matches, Meghann Shaughnessy defeated Belgium’s Kim Clijsters 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3 and will meet No. 4 Monica Seles in the second round; Kristina Brandi beat Hungary’s Rita Kuti Kis 6-0, 6-3 and will meet Frazier in the next round; and Zimbabwe’s Cara Black defeated Erika De Lone 6-1, 6-4.
