Leftist Guerrillas Rob Armored Car

April 30, 1987

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) _ Leftists guerrillas attacked an armored car with a bazooka and submachine guns and fled with $85,000, but police foiled another rebel group’s attempt to rob a bank, army officials said.

All four guards in the armored car were wounded Wednesday when a rocket blew the vehicle apart, and one policeman was killed and three wounded in the bank assault, according to the army.

About 100 guerrillas of the April 19 Movement ambushed the armored car on the outskirts of Cali, a city in western Colombia, said a statement issued by the army’s 3rd Brigade in Cali.

The guerrillas escaped with $85,000 and the guards’ weapons, the statement said.

About 30 guerrillas of the National Liberation Army tried to rob a bank in the town of Sabanas de Torres, but were beaten back by four policemen who barricaded themselves inside, the army’s 5th Brigade in Bucaramanga said in another communique.

Sabanas de Torres is 225 miles northeast of the capital of Bogota.
