Two Adults, Six Children Injured in Schoolyard Car Accident

March 18, 1987

CHICAGO (AP) _ A driver lost control of his car and plowed into a group of adults and children leaving a schoolyard Tuesday, injuring eight people, officials said.

″It happened so fast,″ said eyewitness Joe Gaba. ″He just came out real fast and ’boom.‴

No one was seriously injured in the accident at St. Simeon School on the city’s Southwest Side.

Patrolman Joe Mikulskis identified the driver of the car as William Lazo.

Lazo told police that he was at the school to pick up his grandchildren and that when he began to drive away, his automatic transmission ″jumped into gear and the car raced off,″ Mikulskis said.

Six children and two adults were slightly injured, authorities said. Only a 9-year-old boy was hospitalized overnight for observation.
