3 firefighters hurt in massive Los Angeles building blaze

September 19, 2018

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A massive fire at a commercial building in East Los Angeles has injured three firefighters, one critically.

Fire officials say a 16,000-square-foot building burst into flames shortly before 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Boyle Heights area. The building was full of baled clothing, accessories and other goods that fed the blaze.

Flames shot through the roof and a pillar of black smoke could be seen for miles.

Fire spokesman Brian Humphrey says part of the roof gave way and one firefighter partially fell through. Two others went to help him.

The men suffered burns but their injuries aren’t considered life-threatening.

About 150 firefighters knocked down the flames in two hours.

Authorities say electrical work was being done at or near the building but it’s unclear whether that sparked the fire.
