Freddy Adu given trial by AZ Alkmaar
Freddy Adu is starting a trial with AZ Alkmaar.
The Dutch club announced the trial on Sunday on its website. Forward Aron Johannsson, a member of the U.S. World Cup team, is on AZ’s roster.
Adu, a 25-year-old attacker, was a member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic team. He has struggled since making his debut at age 14 for D.C. United in 2004, the youngest player in Major League Soccer history. He was traded to Real Salt Lake in December 2006, sold to Benfica in July 2007, loaned to Monaco for 2008-09, loaned to Portugal’s Belenenses for 2009-10, loaned to Greece’s Aris in January 2010 and loaned to Turkey’s Caykur Rizespor in February 2011.
He joined MLS’ Philadelphia Union in August 2011, then went to Brazil’s Bahia in April 2013. He was released in November and had trials in February with Blackpool and last month with Norway’s Stabaek, the club coached by former U.S. national team coach Bob Bradley.
