PennDOT to lower weight limit on Northampton Township bridge

April 9, 2019

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation plans to put a weight limit on the Route 2020 (Poorbaugh Road) bridge in Somerset County. The bridge spans Poorbaugh Run in Northampton Township, about 3 miles northwest of the village of Fairhope.

This bridge has not had a previous weight restriction. The new restriction will limit the weight of vehicles crossing it to 30 tons. Vehicles exceeding the posted weight limit are required to use alternate routes.

The weight restriction will slow deterioration on the bridge and preserve safety until repairs or replacement can occur, according to PennDOT. The bridge was built in 1937. In 1949 the structure was rehabilitated by replacing the deck. The structure is 23 feet long and carries an average of just over 60 vehicles daily.
