Hundreds of President Bush Supporters Nationwide Give to Sons’ Campaigns
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) _ They like the father, and like the sons.
Hundreds of people who supported President Bush are giving money to his two sons running for governor.
Thelma Gallagher, a 92-year-old Montana woman, gave $50 to Texas candidate George W. Bush - even though she’s never been to Texas.
She hasn’t been to Florida in three decades, but she gave $30 to Jeb Bush, who’s running for governor there.
In all, 1,673 people have given $537,159 to both Bush campaigns.
Jeb Bush is challenging Democratic Gov. Lawton Chiles in Florida. In Texas, George W. Bush is up against Democratic Gov. Ann Richards. The sons have raised a combined $16 million.
Both Bushes sent fund-raising letters with messages from their parents to voters nationwide who contributed to their father’s 1992 re-election campaign.
Jeb Bush, who has brought his parents to Florida several times for fund- raising events, said it’s only normal to have parents help out their children.
″It would be strange if they weren’t here,″ Bush told a crowd in Orlando. ″They’re my parents and I love them, and I don’t care if Lawton Chiles likes it or not.″
