Winterfest to be celebrated at Ponca State Park

PONCA — Once Northeast Nebraskans are done celebrating New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, Ponca State Park will be the play to be.

On Wednesday, Jan. 2, the park has a day filled with wintertime activities planned.

Its Winterfest begins at 9 a.m. with free crafts, activities and refreshments. A trick pony show will begin at 11:15 a.m. in the park’s resource and education center. Hot dogs, chips and cookies will be served from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for a small fee.

At noon will be the “National Championship Fruitcake Fling.” The event has been featured on the NBC’s “Today Show.” Competitors fling wildlife-friendly fruitcakes and compete for the greatest distance thrown. Prizes will be awarded in three age categories.

At 2 p.m. comes the 3K Yule Log Quest, which is free but requires pre-registration for a team of three to five people.

Teams will be tested mentally and physically by five family-fun challenges that will ultimately lead to clues for the finding of the yule log.

Lighted hayrack rides will run from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The hayrack ride will travel from the resource and education center to the tri-state overlook and back.

A valid park permit is required.
