Larry Chase: Fighting suicide at the local level
Editor: The #YOUmatter; suicide awareness group of Lake Havasu City is in its third year of working within the Havasu community to create awareness that mental health and suicide is a serious problem facing our city, state and nation.
In 2017 the latest statistics available there were over 47,000 suicides in our nation. Suicide is the number two killer of our young people.
This year #YOUmatter; has brought speakers to address the problem. Katy McPherson spoke at the Aquatics Center in April. In August the group will be hosting Kevin Hines, a storyteller at heart. He is a best selling author, global public speaker, and award winning documentary filmmaker on suicide. On Sept. 14, the third annual #YOUmatter; Walk for Life will be held at Rotary Park.
The goal of the organization is to create awareness that mental illness and suicide can be addressed and lives can be saved. To accomplish their goals the group is hosting a two-day fundraising event at College Street Brewhouse on Monday, May 27, and Tuesday, May 28. The restaurant will donate 10 percent of a customer’s bill with a copy of the handout. Copies will be at the hostess desk.
