SAN MARCOS, Texas (AP) _ Wayne Coleman rushed for a career-high 163 yards, including a 56-yard TD run in the third period, to propel Sam Houston to a 26-14 Southland Conference victory over Southwest Texas Saturday.
Coleman’s total, on 26 carries, is also the best by a Sam Houston (5-5, 2-3 SLC) running back in three years.
Denton’s touchdown thwarted a Bobcat comeback attempt. Down by a 19-14 margin, SW Texas (4-7, 2-3) failed to score twice in a five-minute span just into the fourth period.
SW Texas quarterback David Williams connected on 24 of 49 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns and two interceptions. Running back Claude Mathis ran for 117 yards on 20 carries including a 68-yard scoring run in the opening minutes.
Sam Houston hit just 4 of 26 pass attempts but totalled 231 yards on the ground.
Sam Houston grabbed a 9-7 lead at the half on a Marcus Hajdik field goal of 20 yards.
The Bearkats came back from a 7-0 deficit when Bennie Wylie scored from four yards out with 12:43 left in the second quarter. SW Texas had gone up on a Claude Mathis 68-yard touchdown run a minute and a half into the contest.
