Kucera, Henman Advance in Stockholm

November 5, 1997

STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) _ Slovakia’s Karol Kucera upset fifth-seeded Thomas Muster of Austria 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in a second-round match at the Stockholm Open Wednesday.

In another three-set match, No. 8 seed Tim Henman of Britain defeated Sweden’s Magnus Gustafsson 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.

Muster angrily smashed his racket on the court after double-faulting on match point and could be fined.

Despite the loss, Muster, a wild-card entry in the indoor tournament at the Royal Tennis Hall, still has a chance to qualify for the ATP Tour World Championship next week at Hanover, Germany.

Four players still are in the running for the two remaining places awarded under a complex points system. The others are Sergi Bruguera, Marcelo Rios and Yevgeny Kafelnikov.

Americans Pete Sampras and Michael Chang, Pat Rafter of Australia, Jonas Bjorkman of Sweden, Greg Rusedski of Britain and Carlos Moya of Spain already have qualified for the ATP Tour finale.
