Western Carolina 45, The Citadel 25

CULLOWHEE, N.C. (AP) _ Dairus Hooks rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns to lead Western Carolina to a 45-25 win over The Citadel Saturday.

The Catamounts (1-1, 1-0 Southern Conference) piled up 419 yards and overcame 11 penalties for the win.

Josh Brooks opened the scoring with a one-yard run that capped a 9-play, 78-yard drive in the first quarter. Ken Hinsley added a 22-yard field goal for a 10-0 first-quarter lead.

Hooks put Western up 17-0 on a 54-yard run early in the second. Shayne Snyder scored another touchdown six minutes later for a 24-0 lead.

The Bulldogs’ defense generated their first score. Marcus Johnson picked up a blocked punt and ran 33 yards to trim the lead to 24-7.

Justin Skinner kicked a 26-yard field goal early in the third and Kenyatta Spruill capped a 13-play drive with a 4-yard run with five seconds left in the quarter to cut the lead to 24-17.

But Lamont Williams solidified Western’s lead by returning a punt 65 yards for a touchdown with 9:40 left in the game. Williams returned another punt 32 yards later in the quarter to set up Brooks’ 14-yard run that made it 38-14.

Antonio Smith had a touchdown run five minutes later and Hooks had a 19-yard scoring run with 1:07 left in the game.

The Citadel (2-1, 0-1) lost for the 14th consecutive time on the road.
