Penguins Sign Russian Kolkunov
PITTSBURGH (AP) _ The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed center Alexei Kolkunov, who has played for a Russian team for the last four years.
Terms were not released Monday.
The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Kolkunov has 24 goals and 23 points and 93 minutes in 114 games for Krylja Sovetov, the Soviet Wings. He was chosen by the Penguins in the sixth round of the 1995 entry draft.
Kolkunov, the seventh-leading scorer in the 1997 world junior tournament, had his best season for the Wings in 1996-97, scoring nine points and getting 16 assists in 44 games.
Kolkunov is a friend of Penguins right winger Alexei Morozov, who with his brother Valentin also played for Krylja Sovetov. Valentin Morozov signed with the Penguins earlier this year.
