One body recovered after boat crash, Colorado River remains closed while search continues

Update: Mohave County Sheriff Department advises the identity of deceased victim is Christine Lewis, 51, of Visalia, Calif.

TOPOCK — Christine Lewis, 51, of Visalia, Calif., was confirmed dead, her body recovered Monday morning; one man and two women remained missing; nine were injured, two so critically they were flown to trauma centers, in the aftermath of a head-on collision between two boats about an hour after sundown Saturday, Sept. 1.

The Colorado River remained closed to traffic in the search area near the area where Interstate 40 crosses as divers, air and water craft continued the search for the three still missing.

Six were aboard a Sleek Craft boat heading downstream; 10 aboard a Hallet heading upstream when the two crashed on the river between Pirate Cove and Topock 66 Marina. All on board were thrown into the river; both boats sank. Several of the victims were pulled from the water by other water craft operators.

Emergency responders began getting notifications of the crash around 8 p.m. The Mohave County Sheriff Department is the lead agency in the investigation and search, assisted at various times by sheriff departments from San Bernardino, Los Angeles and Orange counties, Arizona Department of Public Safety, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police and the Arizona Game and Fish Department plus some private individuals and commercial emergency responders.
