Man Says He Whipped His Son to Death

November 17, 1988

BULAWAYO, Zimbabwe (AP) _ A man whose teen-age son died after he whipped him as punishment for stealing pleaded guilty to a charge of culpable homicide, a newspaper reported Thursday.

Amos Ndlovu told Bulawayo Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday that his 14-year- old son, Benedict, broke into a cabinet in their home and stole about $26.50, The Chronicle reported.

As punishment, he bound the boy’s hands behind his back and struck him repeatedly with a sjambok, a whip made of rhinocerus or hippopotamus hide, the father said. His son died the following morning from the injuries.

Magistrate Phillip Drazdik fined Ndlovu the equivalent of about $132, or three months’ imprisonment. He also sentenced Ndlovu, 54, to three months’ imprisonment, but suspended it on condition he is not convicted of similar violent acts for three years.

The court found that Ndlovu’s remorse at what he had done to his own son was sufficient punishment.
