Hillsborough police: 2 in possession of an explosive device
Hillsborough police said Friday that two people have been arrested in connection with charges of making an explosive device.
Jimmy Ray Poythress, 33, of Lucama, and Brandy Renee Benson, 30, of Princeton, were charged with possession of a weapon of mass destruction. Poythress was also charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Early Thursday morning, a Hillsborough police officer saw a vehicle with its door open in a parking lot near the Walmart, located in the 500 block of Hampton Pointe Boulevard. Poythress and Benson were sleeping in the vehicle.
When police found the device, which appeared to be homemade, the Durham County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad were called to the scene and the area was secured, authorities said.
Police also found drug paraphernalia in the van. Poythress had multiple outstanding arrest warrants in Wilson and Duplin counties.
Both were being held at the Orange County Detention Center. Poythress was held under a $117,000 bond; Benson was held under a $25,000 bond.
