Mother Jumps from Parade Float to Help Choking Daughter
FRUITPORT, Mich. (AP) _ Linda Ross was riding on a float in this community’s Old Fashioned Days Parade, searching the crowd for her 2-year-old daughter.
But when the float rolled by her house and she spotted her daughter, Erin Marie, she knew something was wrong.
″She looked funny,″ Mrs. Ross said. ″I yelled to my husband who was down the road taking pictures and I screamed for a friend to hop off the float with me.″
Mrs. Ross, a hospital clerk, and nurse Roberta Hass jumped from the North Ottawa Community Hospital’s float and ran to the girl, who was choking.
Hass thumped the child on her back until she coughed up a piece of candy lodged in her throat.
″It was kind of a strange circumstance. ... We were supposed to be at the front of the parade and we actually ended up second from the last,″ Mrs. Ross said. ″If the float would have been sooner we wouldn’t have been passing by at that time.″
