Waterloo girls whip Wisconsin Heights in Capitol South opener
WATERLOO -- Senior guard/forward Brittney Limoseth led all scorers with 18 points while senior point guard Samantha Battenberg added 15 as Waterloo’s girls basketball team opened Capitol South play in style with a decisive 66-48 win over Wisconsin Heights on Friday.
Waterloo (10-1, 1-0 in conference) led by 11 at halftime and never let the visiting Vanguards get closer than six points after gaining the upper hand early on.
“We got the lead early,” Waterloo girls basketball coach Gabe Haberkorn said. “They got within six later in the first half and we picked up our pressure defense for two minutes and ran it back up and kept it (in double figures). They got within six again in the second half and Sam had a big steal for an and-one.
“We subbed in a lot with fresh legs and that really got to them. Our posts had a big game, holding their best post player (to four points).”
In the second half, Limoseth made 6-of-9 free throws while Battenberg was 7-of-10 at the line. Senior forward Ashley Caraballo just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds. The Pirates finished the game with 10 steals.
“I was proud of our girls and proud of our fans,” Haberkorn said. “The energy was electric. They are seeing a different brand of Waterloo basketball right now.”
