BRENTWOOD, Tenn. (AP) _ A gunman suspected of robbing two banks Monday wounded two police officers before he was shot to death by police, authorities said.

The man was killed outside the second bank, a Bank of America branch in this suburb south of Nashville. He was spotted by police as he walked away from the bank carrying an assault rifle, authorities said.

``He just walked out on the street and starting shooting into the police car,″ said Katrina Lopiccollo, a clerk at a gas station across the street. ``He walked right toward it and kept shooting.″

Sgt. Tommy Walsh, 37, and Officer Stephanie Bellis, 26, were wounded before another officer shot the suspect. Authorities said the officers did not suffer life-threatening injuries.

Samantha Ingle, a cashier at a coffee kiosk, saw the shootout.

``I could see the sparks every time he shot. I was dumbfounded. It was surreal,″ Ingle said.

Police spokesman Don Aaron said the suspect was involved in an earlier bank robbery in Nashville, about 10 miles away.
