Ertl To Miss Speed Skiing Events
BAD WIESSEE, Germany (AP) _ German skiing star Martina Ertl will miss the speed events at next month’s Alpine World Championship after injuring her knee.
Ertl, second in overall World Cup standings behind Janica Kostelic of Croatia, tore a ligament in her right knee for the third time in her career in a spill at a giant slalom race in Semmering, Austria, on Saturday.
``There is a glimmer of hope for the technical events (slalom and giant slalom),″ Ertl said. ``But I can’t go to the World Championship without practice if I hope to win a medal.″
The World Championships are slated for St. Anton, Austria, at the start of February.
Ertl said doctors already have ruled out her racing in downhill and super-G events.
She came back from a similar injury to race in the 1997 World championship, but finished far back in the pack.
It was the latest blow for the German team after two other stars, Hilde Gerg and Regina Haeusl, each broke a leg.
