Beirut Experiences Heavy Rainstorm
BEIRUT, Lebanon (AP) _ Municipal workers struggled to clear mud, water and debris from Beirut’s streets Monday after the city’s heaviest rainfall in 18 years.
One man was electrocuted during the storm midday Sunday as he tried to rescue his mother from their flooded house in the Wata Messeitbeh neighborhood. Another man in the same district was injured after being swept away by the floods.
The Weather Authority said the city received 26 inches of rain in one hour Sunday _ the highest amount since 1981.
More rain was expected Monday.
``Beirut has become like Venice, but in an ugly and backward way,″ the newspaper Al-Kifah Al Arabi said Monday as workmen used bulldozers and pumps to clear the rocks and mud that stood a foot deep at some intersections.
The government said it was taking the necessary measures to cope with the downpour.
