Tigers blank T-birds 6-0
BULLHEAD CITY — The T-birds started the New Year with a dose of reality, as far as how far they need to improve to become an elite Arizona Interscholastic Association 4A Conference boys soccer team.
Mohave High School was shut out by the Gilbert High School Tigers 6-0 during the first round of the Red Mountain College Showcase, which was hosted by Red Mountain High School, on Wednesday afternoon.
Red Mountain hails from the 6A Conference and is from Mesa, Arizona.
“Overall, (it) was a good eye-opener for these boys to understand the level we need to be playing at,” said Mohave head coach Matt Camacho by text message. “They were fast and skilled and played the entire width of the field to keep our defensive shape stretched and not compact.”
The loss dropped the 4A Grand Canyon Region T-birds’ record to 5-4-1 overall, 0-2 in conference and 0-0 in region, according to aiaonline.org.
Gilbert was very good and (Mohave’s) Phillip Camacho played very well,” Coach Camacho said. “And I don’t want to sound biased because he’s my kid, but he did play very good
“Phillip was on their 6-foot-2 striker and denied him every opportunity to score, which frustrated him and Gilbert had to find other avenues to score other than that point player.”
Despite surrending six goals, T-birds keeper Renzo Perez earned praise from his head coach.
“Renzo made a lot of saves,” Coach Camacho said.
