MILWAUKEE (AP) _ The New York Mets placed struggling slugger Mo Vaughn on the 15-day disabled list Saturday and recalled catcher Jason Phillips from Triple-A Norfolk.

Vaughn was sidelined with inflammation in his left knee. The big first baseman is batting just .190 with three homers and a team-leading 15 RBIs. He has made five errors.

``It's a beat-up knee,'' general manager Steve Phillips said. ``He's had it drained and he's had it cortisoned.''

An MRI exam was scheduled for Tuesday.

``In the interim I'll do my best to contribute,'' said Tony Clark, who started at first base again Saturday night and homered in the Mets' 3-2 loss. ``My focus was to give Mo a break and pinch-hit, and my role hasn't changed.''

Jason Phillips was up with the Mets earlier this season, getting one hit in five at-bats.
