Source: Dozier becomes a National...John Jay joins White Sox... Tebow is engaged
WASHINGTON (AP) — Second baseman Brian Dozier is now a National. That’s according to a person familiar with the negotiations who says Dozier and Washington have agreed to a $9 million, one-year contract, subject to the successful completion of a physical exam. The free agent, who played for the Twins and Dodgers last season, would fill the National’s need for a new starting second baseman and could help add some power to the lineup.
CHICAGO (AP) — Free agent outfielder Jon Jay and the Chicago White Sox have finalized a $4 million, one-year contract. The 33-year-old Jay played for Kansas City and Arizona last season, batting .268 with three homers and 40 RBIs in 143 games. He also made at least 24 starts at each spot in the outfield. The addition of Jay gives the White Sox another veteran hitter after they struck out 1,594 times last season, tops in the majors.
UNDATED (AP) — Thomas Davis says he’s been informed by the Carolina Panthers he won’t be back with them for a 15th NFL season. The three-time Pro Bowl linebacker is the Panthers’ all-time leading tackler. He overcame a torn ACL in his same knee three times to record 1,094 tackles, 28 sacks and 13 interceptions. Davis was an All-Pro in 2015, the year he went to his only Super Bowl. The 35-year-old says he’s not retiring. He becomes a free agent in March.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio State quarterback Tate Martell may be looking to transfer. Martell has entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal, according to a person with access to the portal. Martell listing his name with the NCAA means schools are now free to talk to him about a potential transfer. Martell, who will be a third-year sophomore, sat behind record-smashing quarterback Dwayne Haskins Jr. last season.
MIAMI (AP) — Former Denver Broncos and University of Florida quarterback Tim Tebow is engaged. The Heisman Trophy winner made the announcement on Instagram today. His fiance is Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, a South Africa native and the 2017 Miss Universe. The 31-year-old Tebow posted photos of himself on one knee and 23-year-old Nel-Peters wearing an engagement ring. Tebow currently plays pro baseball in the Mets organization.
