Man Rescued After 2 Days in Snowbound Car

November 30, 1995

BAY CITY, Mich. (AP) _ A 71-year-old man survived two days trapped in a snowbound car as temperatures plunged below zero before two passers-by spotted him. He was recovering in a hospital today.

``I didn’t try screaming for help because it was too far from any building,″ Harvey Pauwels said from his bed at Bay Medical Center, where he was being treated for hypothermia and dehydration.

Pauwels was driving Monday near his home east of Bay City when he lost control of his car on a snowy road and slid into a 9-foot ditch. Additional snowfall and passing plows then covered the car.

On Wednesday, James Krawczak and Josh Klopf spotted the car and cleared several feet of snow off, to check if anyone was inside.

``I looked in there and I go, `Nope, no one’s in here,‴ said Krawczak, 21, after reaching the driver’s side window.

``Yeah, there is!‴ came a call from inside the car.

The Bay City-Saginaw area had overnight lows of 2 degrees below zero Wednesday and 17 the night before, the National Weather Service said.

``I never started to worry and never thought about death,″ Pauwels said. ``I knew somebody would come along and if they didn’t, I couldn’t do anything about″ it.
