3-Time Marine Corps Veteran Dies
WASHINGTON (AP) _ William Kenefick Jones, 81, a retired Marine Corps lieutenant general and decorated veteran of three wars, died Wednesday at a nursing home in Alexandria, Va., after a stroke.
Jones, who retired from active duty in 1972, was a battalion commander in World War II and a regimental commander in the Korean War. He was wounded in action in 1969 while commanding the 3rd Marine Division in Vietnam.
His military decorations include the Navy Cross for valor, the Silver Star for heroism, three Distinguished Service medals, a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. A native of Joplin, Mo., Jones had lived in Alexandria since 1972.
