Poem: Autumn 2018

November 7, 2018

Jyothirmai Gubili, poet

It’s an unusual Fall

Some trees have turned

Vibrant red and yellow

A few shed their leaves early

But some seem determined

To remain green

Science shows

That trees communicate

With each other

In times of distress or disease

To defend against predators

By releasing compounds into the air,

Or through their network of roots

Some call it the “wood-wide web”

Are the trees sensing something in the air?

Perhaps they are —

The unprecedented widening schism in our nation

And perhaps they, too,

Have chosen to be divided?
