80 players make record-low cut at PGA...Chiefs put Gordon on IR...Source: Maryland puts strength coach on leave

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The second round has wrapped up at the PGA Championship, and 80 players have moved on to the third round. It took an even-par 140 to make the cut, a record low. The previous low for the PGA was 1-over 141 at Atlanta Athletic Club in 2001. Those who didn’t make it include Matt Kuchar (KOO’-chur), Sergio Garcia, Phil Mickelson and Masters champion Patrick Reed. Gary Woodland was the leader after two rounds at 10 under.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have placed offensive lineman Dillon Gordon on injured reserve with a shoulder injury and signed offensive lineman Alex Officer to take Gordon’s place. Running back Charcandrick West returned to the practice field today following a concussion, while outside linebacker Dee Ford walked to the practice facility midway through the workout with an illness.

UNDATED (AP) — A person who has been briefed on the situation says Maryland has placed strength and conditioning coach Rick Court on paid leave while the school investigates claims he verbally abused and humiliated players. Maryland has also placed two athletic training staffers on leave as the school investigates the death of offensive lineman Jordan McNair. The 19-year-old was hospitalized May 29 after an organized team workout and died June 13.

NEW YORK (AP) — Lance Lynn makes his first start in pinstripes at Yankee Stadium this afternoon against Texas. The right-hander was acquired from the Twins on July 30. He gave up just two hits over 7 1/3 innings in his first start with New York on Monday vs. the White Sox. Drew Hutchinson starts the series finale for the Rangers.

CHICAGO (AP) — Jon Lester hopes to return to form when the Cubs host Washington this afternoon. The left-hander is 0-2 with an 8.53 ERA in his past four starts. Nationals right-hander Tanner Roark will try to win his fourth straight start. He’s 6-12 with a 4.21 ERA. The Cubs edged the Nationals 3-2 yesterday in the first meeting between the teams since they beat Washington in the NL Division Series.
