Judge: Man accused of molesting relative free until trial

October 12, 2018

RIO RANCHO, N.M. (AP) — A New Mexico judge has ruled that a man accused of inappropriately touching a relative can be released from jail as he awaits trial.

The Albuquerque Journal reports that the ruling for 63-year-old Winston Scates came Friday in Rio Rancho, where accusations that he inappropriately touched a family member emerged during a separate police investigation.

Police say that investigation — into the killing and sexual assault of a 6-year-old girl — led to the arrest of 21-year-old Leland Hust, the sole person authorities have identified as facing charges in the child’s death.

Police say the girl, her mother, and Hust had been living in Scates’ home.

The charge against Scates is criminal sexual contact of a minor stemming from accusations he molested a relative.

His attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
