Lady ’Stangs remain atop NIAA 2A South
LAS VEGAS — Needles’ Lady ’Stangs basketball team remains atop the NIAA 2A South League after rolling over The Meadows Lady Mustangs 50-8 in that team’s gym on Jan. 19.
Coach Manuel Calderon said the game started slow for Needles but his girls quickly tightened up their defense and got rolling on offense.
All 10 girls saw plenty of playing time, he continued. Every Lady ’Stang contributed to the score. Needles girls went 9-for-12 from the free throw line.
Needles ended the first quarter up 15-3, then posted 16 in the second quarter while holding The Meadows to one. They shut The Meadows out entirely while putting 11 on the board in the third quarter, then scored eight while holding their opponents to four in the final stanza.
The girls skipped the perimeter shooting they’ve been concentrating on in the last couple of games in favor of penetrating to the bucket. Marie Mills knocked down the only three-pointer of the game, a second-quarter highlight of her seven point night.
Paige Murch led the Lady ’Stangs with 14. Imani Evans scored eight. Both shot 100 percent from the charity stripe.
