Local Roundup: Lunenburg Shines at Distance Classic
ROXBURY -- Several Lunenburg boys and girls set personal records as the Blue Knights competed in Saturday’s MSTCA Distance Classic meet at the Reggie Lewis Center.
Sophomore Gabby Maia led the Lunenburg girls with a personal-record time of 3:23 in the 1,000 meters. Other Blue Knight girls to set personal bests on the day included freshmen Grace Roy (mile, 5:59) and Ava Pilon (mile, 6:00); eighth-graders Breanna Bajko (mile, 6:12) and Abby Rodriquenz (1,000, 3:19); and seventh-grader Lauren Long (2-mile, 12:14). With her impressive finish, Bajko shaved 13 seconds off of her previously fastest mile.
Also for the Lunenburg girls, the 4x800-meter relay team of Keena Kelly, Pilon, Roy and Rodriquenz set a personal best with a time of 11:02.
On the boys’ side, Lunenburg’s J.R. Nelson shattered his personal record in the shot put on every attempt, recording distances of 36 feet, 4 inches; 37-1; and, finally, 39.25.
Wes Frank also shined on the day, dropping 15 seconds off of his best 1,000-meter time, finishing in 3:05.78, while teammate Michael Alleva cut 15 seconds from his best time in the 2-mile, finishing in 10:49.73. David Gardner turned in a time of 4:44.38 in the mile, earning a second place.
The boys’ 4x800 team of Gardner, Frank, Zack McLure and Alleva ran their first 4x800 of the year at 9:20.12.
Cairo Jimenez led Fitchburg (1-5) with 16 points, while teammate Bryan Beltre chipped in with 11 and Devin DeLeon scored eight.
Leominster/St. Bernard’s 9
Hannah Erickson had two goals and a pair of assists, and teammates Riley Eldredge and Rachel Kendall each scored twice as the Blue Devils (2-4) won for the second time in as many days. Colby Lane picked up the win in net for Leominster.
