Hershiser Ties NL Record
LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Orel Hershiser tied a modern-day National League record Wednesday by hitting four batters _ in just 1 1-3 innings _ in Los Angeles’ game against Houston.
Hershiser, pitching despite a slight groin muscle pull, matched the record of four hit batters in one game shared by seven others, the last the Dodgers’ Tom Candiotti in 1997, also against Houston.
The Dodgers pitcher hit Richard Hidalgo and pitcher Shane Reynolds in the first inning, then hit Jeff Bagwell and Hidalgo again in the second.
Hershiser gave up seven runs on four hits and two walks, and he also threw several pitches into the dirt and several others to the backstop during his brief stint.
All three of the Astros he hit remained in the game, and none made threatening gestures toward the pitcher.
