Girls hockey | Mahtomedi 4, Lourdes 3

Rochester Lourdes once again played well against a ranked opponent, but came up just short on Tuesday in a 4-3 girls hockey loss to Mahtomedi at Graham Arena IV.

Mahtomedi’s Emma Donovan notched the game-winning goal with 6:19 remaining in the third period.

Donovan’s goal snapped a 3-3 tie which Lourdes battled to earn. The Zephyrs built a 3-1 lead, but the Eagles answered with a goal from Maggie Hanzel at 14:23 of the second period and the tying score from Clara Billings 5:37 into the third.

Emma Schmitz also scored for the No. 7-ranked Eagles (3-2-0 overall). No. 12 Mahtomedi improved to 2-2-1 overall.

Lourdes held a slight 28-27 edge in shots on goal. Zephyrs goalie Lauren Hamme made 25 saves, while Corrin Hanson stopped 23 shots for the Eagles.

The Eagles are back in action Tuesday when they play at New Prague at 7:15 p.m.
