Elway in ‘Good Shape’ for Sunday

September 25, 1998

DENVER (AP) _ John Elway tested his injured leg Friday, and his coach thinks he’ll be able to play this weekend against the Washington Redskins.

The Denver Broncos quarterback went half speed on his strained right hamstring. He remains questionable on the injury report, but coach Mike Shanahan sounded upbeat.

``John looked good,″ Shanahan said after the brief workout. ``He practiced the whole practice and he didn’t have any repercussions from yesterday, so it looks like he’ll be in good shape.

``We didn’t put a lot of pressure on him. He’s not going to sprint. But all the signs right now are very good.″

Asked if the Broncos could use their usual diversified game plan against the Redskins given Elway’s limited mobility, Shanahan said: ``Oh, obviously not. We can’t do everything that we’d normally do. But we can run enough that we’ll be very effective.″

Elway, 38, was injured in the fourth quarter of a 42-23 win over Dallas two weeks ago. After missing most of last week’s practice, he worked out Friday and played in Sunday’s 34-17 victory at Oakland, only to aggravate the injury and leave in the second quarter.

Bubby Brister relieved and threw two touchdown passes to lead the Broncos.

Elway participated in about half of Thursday’s practice, taking it easy on his hamstring. On Friday, he handed off and dropped back but avoided rollouts or bootlegs. Elway was injured and re-injured on rollout plays.

Meanwhile, linebacker John Mobley skipped Friday’s workout because of a tight hamstring but was listed as probable for the game.

``I asked him if we were playing a game today, could he play?″ Shanahan said of Mobley. ``He said, yes. That’s a good sign.″
