A Transition Underway for Super Fans

December 27, 2018

FITCHBURG -- Super Fans Deli and Pizzeria owner Jamie Roy is trading in a college dream come true for one he’s had since he was 16 years old: moving south.

Roy, who is leaving for North Carolina, closed the Main Street restaurant Dec. 20. Its sale to new owners was completed Christmas Eve, he said.

“It’s been a long 61/2 years,” Roy said Wednesday. ”(The restaurant) is my baby. It’s tough to see it go, but I saw the opportunity rise.”

The Leominster native will work in the Raleigh area as a manager’s assistant at Jason’s Deli. Roy hopes to eventually open his own store.

Super Fans new owner is The Hungry Scholar LLC, he said.

The corporation’s goal is to sell pizza, subs, beer and wine, according to The Hungry Scholar’s certificate of organization filed with the Secretary of State’s Office.

Gary Simon, the agent listed for the corporation, was not available for comment Wednesday.

“The owners of Super Fans have sold the business,” says a recorded message on the restaurant’s phone. “We will be reopening on Main in mid January. Check us out soon.”

At the beginning of the month, Roy penned a “PSA to all loyal Super Fans Customers” on the restaurant’s Facebook page to announce his and his family’s decision to sell the restaurant.

Customers have left comments on the page to wish Roy the best of luck and share memories about the restaurant.

“If it wasn’t for our loyal customers we wouldn’t have made it to where we did,” he said.

Roy opened Super Fans at 356 Main St. in 2012 a few months after graduating from Johnson & Wales University’s restaurant management program by adapting a business plan he made for a class.

“A C-minus project ended up being a 61/2-year success,” he said.

Months after opening, Super Fan’s moved to its current location at the MART Intermodal Center at 150 Main St.

Roy said the move helped double business and put the restaurant closer to Fitchburg State University.

Super Fans has attracted sports fans and students alike.

The restaurant is filled with sports memorabilia from Boston and New England teams and jerseys from Fitchburg High School, St. Bernard’s Central Catholic High School and Fitchburg State teams.

Roy said the menu was pieced together with dishes places he traveled while in college.

His favorite foods to make from it are the pizzas and “chubby” subs, which are stuffed with appetizers like mozzarella sticks or chicken fingers, which can make them a challenge to construct.
