IN THE NEWS: VOTE COUNTING MACHINE FLAW PROBED

UNDATED (AP) — Is your vote safe from hacking? Security researchers say there’s a chance it might not be. They say they have turned up an uncorrected security flaw in a vote-counting machine that is used in 23 U.S states. And they say the flaw leaves the machines vulnerable to hacking. What’s worse is that the manufacturer of the machine was told about the problem 11 years ago — and the security hole still hasn’t been plugged. The machine in question is the M650 high-speed ballot scanner by Election Systems & Software, the nation’s leading elections equipment vendor. The vulnerability was the most serious noted in voting equipment in a report yesterday that looked at the findings of security researchers from a recent hacking convention in Las Vegas.

IN THE NEWS: ROBOT BROTHEL

HOUSTON (AP) — Is the world ready for robot brothels? Officials in Houston say they aren’t — so they are pushing back against a Canadian company that wants to open one in the city. Houston mayor Sylvester Turner says the city is reviewing its laws to determine whether having someone operate a robot brothel might run afoul of public health ordinances. The company, KinkySdollS, announced last month on its Facebook page that it plans on opening a “love dolls brothel” in Houston. It would be the company’s second location. The first location opened in 2017 in Toronto. The company’s social media pages say its dolls are human like, which can speak and feel warm to the touch.

ON THE WEB: KAVANAUGH HEARING

CYBERSPACE (AP) — It seems everyone was watching the Brett Kavanaugh hearing held in Washington D.C. yesterday. But what if you weren’t one of the “everyone” involved? You can find any number of web sites featuring large chunks of the testimony of the Supreme Court nominee and his accuser, Christine Blasey (BLAY’-zee) Ford. Meanwhile, the Senate Judiciary Committee is to vote on the Kavanaugh nomination today.
