Werder suspends 2 players ahead of key match

April 26, 2013

BREMEN, Germany (AP) — Werder Bremen has suspended star players Marko Arnautovic and Eljero Elia a day before a crucial Bundesliga match at Bayer Leverkusen.

The two were caught speeding in separate cars on a highway in the early hours of Friday. Police said no alcohol was involved.

But they got into what police said was an “aggressive” argument with officers, who called for help. No arrests were made.

Werder said it could not tolerate the “unprofessional” behavior before a key match. Werder is winless in nine matches and could drop into the relegation zone.
