LOS ANGELES (AP) — A man who ran a live-in alcohol rehabilitation center in Los Angeles has been charged with killing a resident.

Authorities on Tuesday say Jason Aviles of Long Beach is been charged with murder.

Aviles ran the Grupo Renacer rehab center. Prosecutors say last August, Aviles blocked a resident's airway using tape and a spoon and stood on the chest of the agitated man.

Sixty-year-old Jose Sandoval died of asphyxiation.

Authorities didn't say why Aviles took those measures but noted that he has no professional medical training.

Aviles was arrested last month and remains jailed on $2 million bail. It's unclear whether he has a lawyer.

If convicted, he could face 25 years to life in prison.
