Your Turn: Nov. 14

November 14, 2018

Great idea for partyRe: “Centrist Party,” Your Turn, Nov. 10:What a great political concept expressed by the letter writer, Susan Hull. She suggests a “centrist party” for many of us repelled by the present extremists of both political parties. My wife and I describe ourselves as liberal Republicans; others are conservative Democrats. Too often, we have no one to vote for. As “centrists,” we would likely be a majority. Our color would be purple and our symbol, of course, the bald eagle!Clay McGaughyBorder securityRe: “Dems find no map in 2018 to a sure 2020,” Nation, Sunday:Selling a strong border security would have made it for Beto O’Rourke, and without it the Democrats will continue to struggle. In my opinion, all, regardless of political affiliations, sex, race or religion, are for better border security — not a wall but better ways to screen people coming into the country. I feel strongly that 100 votes are lost for every one gained in not advocating for a strong border security. It’s clear that lots of what President Donald Trump is doing is OK with many, and not just the hard-core right. Simply opposing Trump and being for health care is not going to cut it; voters want an acceptable alternative; this is especially so for the independent voter. Border security, jobs, health care, cutting or eliminating the rip-off of the government by all, rich and poor, and being able to convey that to the people will make the majority happy and win elections.Frank Bent, SchertzFix electionsIsn’t it strange that this country can beat the Nazi war machine, put a man on the moon, provide internet service almost everywhere, but it can’t devise a system in which every vote will be counted speedily and accurately?I guess those in Congress are not interested in changing things. Why should they? This is a big deal and should be treated seriously. It’s past time.Herman I. Morris
