Math Teacher Charged at Lowell Home in Child-porn Probe
BOSTON -- A math teacher from Lowell was arrested Tuesday on charges of receiving and possessing child pornography, prosecutors said.
Warren Anderson, 26, was arrested at a family member’s home in Harvard on Tuesday as part of a federal investigation, according to a press release from the office of U.S. Attorney Andrew Lelling.
Anderson was arraigned in federal court in Boston later that afternoon on one charge each of receipt and possession of child pornography.
Investigators seized several electronic devices from Anderson, including a laptop from his parents’ home in Lowell, where Anderson told authorities he was living during the summer.
The laptop allegedly contained 20 to 30 gigabytes of files graphically depicting sexual activities with young children, agents wrote in affidavits released by the U.S. Attorney’s office.
Anderson teaches at Narragansett Middle School in Baldwinville, a neighborhood of Templeton. He allegedly told investigators he used TOR, an application for anonymous Internet browsing, to access the pornographic materials on the dark web. He also allegedly admitted to using Kik and Dropbox to exchange child pornography online and said that, while in Lowell last week, he both uploaded and downloaded such materials, according to court documents.
Magistrate Judge Donald Cabell ordered Anderson detained following his appearance in federal court Tuesday. Anderson will appear again in court on Monday, Aug. 27, for a probable-cause and detention hearing.
If convicted, Anderson could face decades in prison and up to a $250,000 fine.
A letter about Anderson’s arrest was sent out to faculty by Narragansett Regional School District Superintendent Christopher Casavant on Tuesday.
“We have been advised by the Department of Homeland Security and local authorities that at this time there is no evidence of localized victimization of any student, past or present, during Mr. Anderson’s two-year tenure with the District,” Casavant stated. “We were also advised by the Department of Homeland Security that the investigation focused on Mr. Anderson’s place of residence, located in Lowell.”
Casavant also stated Anderson has been placed on leave until further notice, “and will have no access to, or interaction with, any student or staff member of the Narragansett Regional School District.”
