Parade of Champions set for June
GREENWICH — Greenwich High School’s champion student athletes will be honored with a parade, but it won’t be for another six months.
Days after announcing there would be a parade to honor fresh off their blowout win over New Canaan in the Class LL Championship game, the date of the parade has been set for June 9 and go through downtown Greenwich.
The “Parade of Champions” will honor the undefeated GHS Cardinals football team, which last week blew out New Canaan in the Class LL Championship game, and the GHS Girls Swimming and Diving Team, which won the FCIAC championship, Class LL state championship and the State Open championship.
“This is an opportunity to honor the accomplishments of all of our student athletes,” Interim Superintendent of Schools Ralph Mayo said in a statement on Friday afternoon.
First Selectman Peter Tesei first suggested the parade last week on social media. Other officials and residents, including Mayo, Interim GHS Headmaster Richard Piotrzkowski, Athletic Director Gus Lindine, state Rep. Fred Camillo and parent Rick Novakowski, jumped on board to push the idea forward.
The parade is set to begin at 2 p.m. at Lafayette Place. Participants will march down Greenwich Avenue to the Havemeyer Building, where a ceremony will be held t honor athletes and coaches.
Tesei and Mayo both said waiting until June would ensure the kind of celebration the athletes deserve due to warmer weather.
Mayo also said having the parade in June would give students a chance to include the floats they had made for homecoming, most of which was canceled due to inclement weather.
Barbara Heins, executive assistant to the first selectman, said on Friday that the town was fine with waiting for the celebration.
“It is the desire of the school administration to wait for better weather and more importantly, to have an all-inclusive athletic tribute to the school’s various championship teams in one organized town-wide celebration,” Heins said. “The town fully supports the school administration decision to wait until late spring.”
