SPRINGFIELD, Ill. _ Advocates of Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s graduated income tax are planning to take it to a vote in the Illinois Senate. The plan to replace the state’s 4.95 percent flat tax with a graduated system that puts a heavier burden on more affluent residents could be called in the Senate Wednesday. The Democratic governor says 97% of taxpayers would see no tax increases. The plan would need voter approval in November 2020 if it’s approved by extraordinary legislative majorities. CHICAGO _ A multiday sentencing hearing is wrapping up for a suburban Chicago man convicted of terrorism for trying to detonate what he thought was a powerful bomb next to a crowded bar. After two days of testimony for the prosecution, attorneys for 25-year-old Adel Daoud get their chance Wednesday to call witnesses as they seek leniency for their client. HONOLULU _ The father of a 28-year-old pilot says his son was among three people killed in a Hawaii helicopter crash. Bobby Berridge said Tuesday his son Joseph Berridge moved to Honolulu from New Mexico to pilot Hawaii helicopter tours. Officials say all three onboard the helicopter died Monday when it crashed in Kailua, a Honolulu suburb. Honolulu’s Medical Examiner’s office said 28-year-old Ryan McAuliffe of Chicago was one of the passengers, with identification of the final passenger still pending. By Jennifer Sinco Kelleher.
