Halas’ OT goal lifts Immaculate to Class S final
WETHERSFIELD—The Immaculate field hockey team is heading to its first ever state championship.
And what a way to head there.
It was a back-and-forth Class S semifinal against Stonington with several lead changes, but senior standout Madison Halas had the final say. She scored once in regulation, then again with 1:55 left in the overtime session to give No. 3 Immaculate a 4-3 win over No. 2 Stonington.
Immaculate (19-2-0-1) will face top-seeded Granby in the final on Saturday back at Wethersfield. The Bears edged the Mustangs 1-0 in last season’s semifinals.
The Mustangs trailed 1-0 before Molly Coyle struck twice to take a 2-1 lead early in the second half. The teams traded goals and Halas’ first strike gave Immaculate a 3-2 lead; Stonington scored with less than five minutes left.
