South Abington Twp. Man, Already Facing Criminal Charges, Now Accused Of Assaulting Woman

December 19, 2018

A South Abington Twp. man free on bail on charges related to sending sexually explicit texts to a minor is now accused of assaulting a woman. Township police arrested Carl Checko, 54, 230 Scott Road, on Tuesday. He is charged with making terroristic threats, simple assault and harassment stemming from two incidents, one Monday night and another early Tuesday morning. Checko is accused of shoving Melissa Checko during an altercation at the Scott Road address at about 8 p.m. Monday, police said. About 3 a.m. Tuesday, the argument started again. Carl Checko punched the woman several times on the chin, then hit her in the arm she raised to protect herself and told her he was trying to hit her in the throat so she would stop breathing, police said. Carl Checko then fled the home. Melissa Checko suffered bruising on the chin and arm and shoulder area, police noted in court documents. Township police previously arrested Carl Checko in September on charges of corruption of minors, unlawful contact with minors and criminal use of a communication facility. A minor told investigators that she’d been receiving text messages from Carl Checko for about three months and some were of a sexual nature. In some, he’d talk about her breasts; in another, he wrote he loved her like a daughter, but “one he would commit incest with,” according to court documents. Carl Checko had been free on bail on those charges since Sept. 21, when he posted $20,000 bond, according to court dockets. He waived a preliminary hearing on those charges in October. Magisterial District Judge Sean McGraw arraigned Carl Checko on charges stemming from the assault on Tuesday and set bail at $75,000. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 26.
