WASHINGTON (AP) _ Dominican Republic President Hipolito Mejia met Tuesday with Secretary of State Colin Powell and discussed ways the two countries can achieve greater economic cooperation.

State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said Powell thanked Mejia for his country's cooperation on law enforcement and security issues.

Mejia declined comment to reporters after the meeting except to say that that trade promotion is a prime purpose of his visit.

He praised Powell for his knowledge of the region, attributing this in part to his ``Caribbean blood.'' Powell's parents immigrated to the United States from Jamaica

Mejia also has meetings planned with National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice and with U.S. Special Trade Representative Robert Zoellick.
