Joe Biden announces big kickoff rally in ‘birthplace of democracy’ Philadelphia

May 8, 2019

Former Vice President Joseph R. Biden on Wednesday announced that he will kick off his presidential run with a rally May 18 in Philadelphia.

He said he was going to the “birthplace of our democracy” to highlight his campaign “to restore the soul of the nation, rebuild the middle class, and unify the country.”

The rally will be the first test of Mr. Biden’s ability to draw a large crowd of supporters.

The front-runner in the crowded field of Democratic presidential hopefuls, Mr. Biden has made the general election battleground of Pennsylvania the focus of his run for the nomination.

The chief argument for a Biden candidacy is that his ties to Pennsylvania and popularity with blue-collar workers make him uniquely qualified to win back the Rust Belt state that President Trump needs in his column to remain in the White House.

He launched his campaign April 29 with an event with labor union members in Pittsburgh. Since then, he has been touring early voting states of Iowa, South Carolina, Nevada and New Hampshire.
