Marshall bows out of C-USA soccer, losing 2-1 to Kentucky in semifinal

November 11, 2018

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Top-seeded University of Kentucky, an affiliate member of Conference USA for men’s soccer, defeated fifth-seeded Marshall University 2-1 in a league tournament semifinal Friday.

Kentucky, ranked No. 3 in the nation, scored in the eighth minute when Kalil Elmedkhar fired in a rebound. C-USA Offensive Player of the Year J.J. Williams of the Wildcats added to the led in the 18th minute.

Marshall keeper Paulo Pita stopped Williams on a penalty kick in the 49th minute to prevent Kentucky going up by three.

J.P. Rylah put Marshall (8-9-3) on the scoreboard at 60:45. Rylah took a perfectly placed cross from Jamil Roberts and knocked it into the net.

“Tough way to go out,” Marshall head coach Chris Grassie said in a HerdZone.com release. “We were without our two centerbacks (Illal Osmanu and Chris Taibi), so we had to adjust and try something new. To be fair to our lads, they struggled with the new shape at the beginning, which is 100 percent my fault. It took us about 35 to 40 minutes to figure out the new system, and how to play without centerbacks. Once we did, we were really good.”

Kentucky (16-1-1) plays third-seeded Charlotte in the finals at 1 p.m. Sunday for the championship. Charlotte won Friday night against second-seeded Old Dominion 4-2.
