Thomas leads Fairland to OVC golf championship
McDERMOTT, Ohio - Fairland’s Clayton Thomas shot 5-over-par, 77, to win medalist honors and lead Fairland to the Ohio Valley Conference golf championship Friday at 6,677-yard, par-72, Portsmouth Elks Golf Course.
Thomas, a sophomore, shot 38-39 - 77, one stroke better than runner-up William Sturgis of Portsmouth. Sturgis shot 39-39 - 78. Thomas and Sturgis were joined on the all-tournament team by Fairland’s Reece Belville, who shot 39-41 - 80 to finish third; Coal Grove’s Jake Sites, who was fourth after carding 44-39 - 83; Fairland’s Hannah Shrout, who earlier this season won OVC girls medalist honors, who shot 41-43 - 84 to place fifth; and Coal Grove’s Jed Whitworth, who shot 44-42 - 86 for a sixth-place finish.
The Dragons finished with a team score of 168-169 - 337, to place 37 strokes ahead of runner-up Gallia Academy, which went 187-187 - 374. Chesapeake was third at 198-185 - 383; followed by Portsmouth at 190-194 - 384; Coal Grove at 199-188 - 387; and South Point at 224-231 - 455.
